Kraft Mac & Cheese Recalled Due to Metal Contamination

Kraft Foods has announced a recall of 242,000 cases of Macaroni & Cheese after several boxes were found to contain metal shards. In total, more than 6.5 million boxes of Mac & Cheese were covered as part of this recall.

The Kraft recall is the latest in what is becoming a rather large list of food products that have been recalled in recent years due to contamination by a foreign object. Some of the other high profile recalls of this nature include:

  • 50,000 pounds of prepared meat products from Unibright Foods were recalled due to contamination by extraneous metal materials
  • 6,000 bags of ice were recalled by Wegmans due to contamination by metal pieces from a broken machine part
  • 74,000 cases of boxed pasta mix products were recalled by Bay Valley Foods due to contamination by metal pieces
  • 2.8 million boxes of Bite Size Frosted and Unfrosted Mini-Wheats were recalled by Kellog due to contamination by fragments of flexible metal mesh from a defective manufacturing part

These recalls typically don’t garner as many headlines as the higher profile food-borne illness recalls associated with salmonella or E. coli contamination, but contamination of food products by a foreign object is becoming a growing problem. This is largely due to the consumer demand for mass produced food products that are typically manufactured using metal machinery.

Some food manufacturers are starting to make greater efforts to correct this issue by using ultrasound and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to detect the presence of foreign objects before these food products make it to market. However, greater efforts are necessary. When food contaminated by a metal object is consumed, it can cause a serious injury.

If you’ve been injured after eating a food product contaminated with a metal object, you may be entitled to recover compensation for your damages.
