Celebrities Continue to Endorse Xarelto Even as Lawsuits Rise

Even as the number of Xarelto lawsuits nears 2000, Janssen Pharmaceutica has launched an aggressive marketing campaign to increase its revenue and sales of the deadly drug. While Xarelto continues to be prescribed without a known antidote to stop fatal bleeding from occurring, celebrities are still endorsing the medication. Four known celebrities have been featured in prominent television ads. Those celebrities include NBA player Chris Bosh, NASCAR driver Brian Vickers, Saturday Night Live alumnus Kevin Nealon, and legendary pro golfer Arnold Palmer.

The ad features these four celebrities playing golf and discussing the benefits of taking Xarelto. Throughout the commercial, the celebrities continue to endorse the prescription medication, citing how it was proven to treat and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. One even points out that it was proven to reduce the risk of stroke in people who suffered from atrial fibrillation. In the commercial, however, was no mention of the FDA concerns about clinical testing or how Janssen and Bayer funded the post-market studies. They also did not discuss the serious dangers associated with uncontrolled bleeding.

Unlike their competitors, Xarelto does not have an antidote – meaning uncontrolled or excessive bleeding cannot be stopped. When a patient on Heparin or Coumadin begins to bleed, doctors can give them an antidote to stop the bleeding. When a patient begins to bleed uncontrollably after taking Xarelto, there is little a doctor can do to stop it. As a result, numerous individuals have developed serious complications or died after taking Xarelto.

Adverse Effects of Xarelto are Numerous

Since it was approved for use by the FDA, Xarelto has been hit with almost 2000 lawsuits. These lawsuits claim that Janssen Pharmaceutica and Bayer knowingly marketed a drug with no known antidote and concealed important safety information regarding Xarelto. They also claim that there was inadequate testing of the drug prior to marketing.

Individuals taking Xarelto have reported serious side effects, including:

  • Pulmonary embolism
  • DVT
  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
  • Pulmonary hemorrhage
  • Hematomas
  • Rectal or urinary bleeding
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Stroke
