All-Metal Hip Implants
Like the voluntarily recalled DePuy ASR and ASR XL hip implants, the Pinnacle model is a metal-on-metal system used as a hip replacement for patients with damaged or diseased hip joints caused by fractures, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or avascular necrosis (AVN).
As reports of failure and painful side-effects associated with Pinnacle hip implants continue to increase, so do allegations of defective design and failure of DePuy to warn patients about potential complications.
Hip Implant Complications
In all-metal hip implants such as Pinnacle, metallic debris is thought to scrape off with movement and be absorbed by the bloodstream. This breakdown may contribute to hip implant failure and lead to elevated chromium and cobalt levels.
Other complications associated with metal-on-metal hip implants include:
- Bone deterioration
- Decreased mobility
- Difficulty sitting and standing
- Inflammation and swelling
- Joint dislocation
- Pain
