Testim is one of the many testosterone treatment drugs which have flooded the market in the past few years. Auxilium, the manufacturer of Testim has been marketing testosterone replacement therapy drugs for years. In fact, Auxilium developed Testopel testosterone pellets which were first introduced in 1972. While the testosterone supplement sold under the brand name AndroGel currently leads in terms of sales, Testim sales are more than $200 million annually. Sales of testosterone drugs increased dramatically between 2000 and 2015, with more than a five-fold increase, thanks to a deceptive marketing and advertising campaign which lured men into using the drug for off-label purposes.

Testim Used Off-Label for Symptoms of “Low-T”

Testim received FDA approval on October 31, 2002. Testim is administered via transdermal patches or a gel which is applied daily on the upper arm and shoulder areas. The FDA approved Testim only for men who have extremely low testosterone levels or those whose body has stopped producing testosterone altogether.

Despite this, Testim and many other testosterone drugs are being used off-label to treat symptoms which are essentially due to the natural aging process. It is likely an overabundance of advertising campaigns is responsible for the huge surge in the use of prescription Testim. These ads imply that men who experience decreases in strength, increases in belly fat, erectile dysfunction, lags in energy, muscle mass reductions, and fatigue are suffering from “Low-T,” and could benefit from a prescription for Testim.

Studies Determine Serious Risks Associated with Testim

A study done in 2013 highlighted the potential risks of blood clots associated with Testim and other testosterone supplements. A study in the JAMA, also in 2013, concluded there is a 29 percent increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death among men taking Testim and similar drugs. In 2009, the FDA required Auxillium to place a black box warning on Testim, which highlighted the risks of secondary exposure—for women and children who are exposed to a man using Testim gel. Secondary contact can result in such symptoms as accelerated bone development, abnormal genital growth, violent behaviors and increased libido.

An Overview of Testim Lawsuits

The first Testim lawsuit was filed against Auxilium Pharmaceuticals in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. A 56-year old man alleged he suffered a stroke after using Testim, and that his personal and professional life were both devastated by the stroke. The plaintiff had no prior history of blood clot, heart attack, or stroke. This first lawsuit alleged Auxilium crafted ad campaigns which were designed to make men believe they suffered from Low-T and that Auxilium did not warn the public regarding the potential risks and side effects associated with Testim.

Health Risks Associated with Testim

The insert accompanying Testim prescriptions lists the following potential serious side effects:

  • Swelling of the ankles
  • Nausea and stomach pain
  • Problems with urination
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Blistering of the skin where Testim transdermal patches are placed
  • Problems with the liver
  • Depression
  • Swelling and tenderness of the breasts
  • Low-grade fever
  • Chronic headaches

Potentially life-threatening risks associated with Testim are heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, and even death. Due to the manufacturer’s failure to warn regarding the risks of Testim, those who have taken the testosterone supplement and suffered injury may be entitled to financial compensation.
